When Philanthropy Kills
- James Shelley
I would like to tell some stories that relate how dramatically ineffective most current models of "international aid" really are. While many people are hooked in the emotional jugular by images of starving children and 1-800 numbers on their televisions, the real "on the ground" effectiveness of models like "child sponsorship" often has more negative impacts in small communities than positive ones. There are other ways and paradigms to think about what it means to responsibly leverage our resources to help other people, and I would like to present these options as clearly and concisely as possible -- this will be the emphasis of the presentation.
James has humanitarian and development work experience in Bosnia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Belize, as well as some research experience in Thailand, Mexico, Croatia and Hungary.
