In Alaska, 40% of students qualify for free/reduced schools meals, over 45,000 students. Of these, 15% attend schools that do not offer a breakfast program – that’s over 7,000 missed meals each day.
Kokayi Tehuti Nosakhere is the product of Alaska. Born in Fairview, he completed his entire education within the Anchorage-based system. His most recent academic accomplishment was graduation from Leadership Anchorage in the Class of 2009.
Kokayi was radicalized on October 16, 1995 through his attendance at the Million Man March. Since then, community activism has become a way of life for him. In 2009 he (almost) single-handedly organized 251 letters in support of increasing Alaska’s minimum wage. Kokayi is the Food Stamp Outreach Coordinator at Food Bank of Alaska and he is devoting his time, intelligence and energy towards ending childhood hunger in America by 2015.
