Doing the Hoochie Coochie
- Trisha Miah
How I learned to (laugh/organize/costume/choreograph/direct/risk/fail/cavort/network/model/isolate/perform/teach/lead/follow/drink) bellydance. My adventures with The Lunatic Vagabonds and Unveiled Bellydance.
Awesomeness included in this talk:
a drummer
a dance company
a demonstration of the Hoochie Coochie
Mia started experimenting with bellydance in 1999, took a break to move to Germany for a year, and got serious in 2001. In 2004 Mia saw Rachel Brice perform with the Bellydance Superstars and realized that belly dance offers amazing creative freedom if you have the guts to take risks, so she teamed up with Kali and founded the Lunatic Vagabonds in 2005 to push the bellydance limits (which at one point involved performance in zombie make up on a freezing hilltop). In 2008 Mia inherited the sometimes dubious and always interesting leadership of Unveiled Bellydance Ann Arbor.
Mia is also an alum of the University of Michigan and teaches high school English.
