Bikeable Birmingham? It's Possible

- Elisa Munoz

Contrary to popular belief, there IS a bike culture in Birmingham. It is one of the most fun groups I have ever been a part of and I would love to see it spread to include everyone. Staying healthy, hanging out with friends and exploring your city in a way you just can't do it a car...how can you NOT want in on that?

I am passionate about making Birmingham a more liveable city, especially in regards to our built environment and changing the car-centric culture. Riding a bike is easy, fun and should be safe for everyone! Our transit issues, coupled with pollution and obesity issues are the perfect storm for a bike renaissance.

After being a part of this group for over a year, and going car free 9 months ago, I realize the many issues that plague us. They are not easy, but they are simple.
With a shift in thoughts and some pressure toward our leadership, Birmingham can be the next Portland-no, better!

Bio:

I am an avid bicycling advocate who, along with 2 friends, founded Bici Bicycle Cooperative, a non-profit bike shop in the heart of Birmingham City. I went car free 9 months ago and am exclusively a bike (or carpool) commuter. I co-write a bicycling blog, Bike Skirt, that talks about cycling, both as a woman and a Birminghamian.
In addition to my work with Bici, I am also the Program Coordinator for Greater Birmingham Community Food Partner, a non-profit committed to fresh, healthy food for all.
