UWM CELEBRATES GIS DAY
Community Invited to Learn More About GIS

UW-Milwaukee will be celebrating GIS Day 2011 from 8:30 am-4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 16. The event will be held in the Golda Meir Library conference center on the fourth floor of the Library.

A wide range of activities are planned for the day, including rotating sessions, hands-on workshops, tours, Spatial Ignite talks, and a map gallery and student poster competition. Activities are planned for all skill levels, from those who are curious about what GIS can do to those who use it on a daily basis. Participants are welcome to attend for the whole day, or to stop in for one or two sessions.

Keynote speaker Rob Glazier will speak over lunch on GIS use in Healthcare planning and research, based on his experience with the Walgreens corporation. A free pizza lunch is included with registration.

GIS Day is an annual international event that creates a space for users of geographic information systems (GIS) to demonstrate real-world applications and spread awareness of the ways GIS helps people see the world. GIS has applications in many areas including geography, urban planning, public health, and business.

GIS connects location to information, allowing people to make better choices about where to build hospitals and schools, where to locate businesses, and how to respond to emergencies. With GIS, users can view relationships, processes, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. From mapping wildfires to finding the best location for your favorite coffee shop, GIS helps people see how the world works and changes.
