Discussing the 5 w's (what, who, why, when, where) and the how we are leaving for a year-long RV trip around the States and how you can do it too.
About Brenda: My family is leaving for a year-long trip around the country in an RV. We have two boys and one, big disabled, rescued dog. Mom, teacher (past), trainer, facilities management. And award winning speaker. Currently, freelance writer for the Examiner.com.
Once upon a time, in this very land, people from all around came together to speak their mind. They didn't all agree and some were downright belligerent, but they came and they listened and they learned from one another.
It's an ancient art called Dialog.
Today dialog is nearly extinct. In its place is a much more dynamic and entertaining form of engagement: Demonization!
Come hear how demonization is leading us like lemmings off a cliff and how the art of dialog can save us from the impending splat!
About Robert: As a father of three headstrong boys and husband to a woman who is both smarter and more eloquent, you'd think I would have learned long ago to just keep quiet. But no, every once in a while the random thoughts rattling around inside my skull join hands and rally to be set free. I love these liberations!
Milk has calcium, which gives you strong bones. That is a fact. Milk goes great with the foods like cookies or peanut butter. That is a truth. Facts are boring. Truths are fascinating. We can disagree about facts but will always agree on truths. Facts can even be fabricated; truths are, well, true. This talk will examine the difference between facts and truths and how to use the idea of truths over facts to be a better, more insightful, and more successful communicator.
About Nick: I'm a copywriter, which means my job is to take boring facts you already knew and turn them into truths that inspire you to act.
What is it about baked, carb-y goodness that sets my heart on fire? Baking is equal parts alchemy, artistry and luck, with a dash of adventure. And butter. Don't forget the butter.
Gluten is magic. Let me show you how a few simple, inexpensive ingredients can transform your meals and your life.
About Lisa: For as long as she can remember, Lisa loved to create art. For even longer than she can remember, she also loved to eat two or three meals a day. So in order to continue doing the eating part, she decided to go into graphic design.
If she's not up to her elbows in PMS chips and paper swatch books, chances are Lisa will be in the kitchen, up to her earlobes in sourdough starter and turbinado sugar. After all, a girl's gotta eat.
Full title: "Manolos to Marmot: Lifestyle Tips for Successfully Transitioning Between Southern California and Oregon"
My childhood, and subsequent teen and college years, in Oregon left me well versed in cold weather and rain appropriate outdoor gear, attire and foot wear. Unfortunately after 15 years of living in Hollywood, my lifestyle (and wardrobe) was ill prepared for my return to the PNW. My presentation will be full of tips for recent transplants or for those contemplating a southern migration.
I'll be covering the following:
1) Fundamentals of a Hollywood lifestyle
2) Fundamentals of an Oregon lifestyle
3) Grooming differences and fundamentals
4) The shoes...(sigh)...yes, the shoes
5) Items that will be of little use in your destination city
About Kristin: A native Oregonian, Kristin Luck-Donatelli left Eugene in 1994 to pursue fame and fortune in Los Angeles but instead ended up toiling for some of the largest market research firms in the country. Kristin was one of the original pioneers of the multi-media online research business 9 years ago when she joined ACNielsen to assist in the development of proprietary capabilities for testing full screen video and other multi-media materials securely online.
As the Co-Founder of OTX (Online Testing Exchange), Kristin built and managed the operational and client management infrastructure for a start-up online market research firm that became the fastest growing research company in the US in 2002 and 2003 (Advertising Age).
After selling OTX and the consulting firm that followed, Kristin migrated back to Oregon after meeting her raft guide husband on the Owyhee river. Kristin lives in Bend with her husband, assorted animals and 40+ pairs of Manolo Blahniks.
Who wants to work until they are old and tired? Lewis is not one of those people, so he cooked up an idea of how to leverage social media to retire in 6 easy steps. All you need is a computer, Internet connection and an idea. While Lewis is only on step 4, he will guide you through to the RV and Sunriver condo livestyle. Working 9-5 is for suckers, right?
About Kent: Lewis is the founder and president of two search engine and social media marketing agencies in Portland, OR. He is also an adjunct professor at Portland State University, teaching a search engine marketing (SEM) workshop and has received a few awards, recognition and whatnot for his entrepreneurial endeavors.
Current research shows Chukar hunting is three times more addictive than heroin. Ok, I made that up.
The real trouble with Chukar hunting is that the very nature of the wily and elusive birds requires a very specific piece of equipment, a bird-dog.
The ultimate extreme athlete, a bird-dog is a tenacious, relentless creature able to cover more ground than a helicopter, searching out coveys tucked away in the rockiest, steepest terrain you can find between Bend and the Snake River and upon finding the birds will wait patiently for the two-legger to catch up.
As with all intensively driven athletes, year round training is required. The only difference between a triathlete and a bird-dog is the later will eat your couch if you don't let him run 20+ miles 4 or 5 times a week.
Ya, you're going to need a mountain bike and a pigeon..................
About Kate: Originally from Montana, Kate Willis landed in Bend two days after her 21 birthday with all she owned and a St Bernard in a 1984 Toyota Camry. Ten years and many gear-intensive sports later, Kate's basement and garage contains more outdoor recreation equipment than REI.
Sacha Baron Cohen's character Borat Sagdiyev was supposedly from the glorious nation of Kazakhstan. Having spent two years living in Kazakhstan, I can attest that Kazakhstan is neither glorious nor the backwards cesspit that Borat portrayed. Let me tell you what Kazakhstan is really like.
About Heidi: I'm a 30 something mother of an 8 month old, Presbyterian Minister and former Peace Corps volunteer.
In which I will discuss beer and women. The increase in marketing beer to women, female brewmasters, stereotypes about beer and the like. Most importantly, I'll share how it's quite possible that men have women to thank for creating beer. You're welcome boys, you're welcome.Bend-loving runner, mom, social worker and let's not forget, beer-drinker.
